Automation #496

Press 1 for...
Nope, there's none of that with Automation #496 because this intro is based on Rick Dangerous. Well, there's no interaction and little to do other than walk and climb ladders but it's still a cool alternative compared to what we would have expected back then. Control Ricky D. with the joystick and entering a doorway selects a game to play!!

Virtual Escape

Jaw-Dropping!!

After about 6 years, Equinox eventually released Virtual Escape in 1999 and it's one of my favourite demos. The tunes are utterly sexy and there are also some of the most incredible visuals that will blow your socks off!! Those swirling dots are gobsmackingly beautiful and I love the super-duper fast 3D. It's hard to believe this is all on a stock 512KB 8MHz Atari ST. An incredible production that oozes class and is definitely one of the beST 16-Bit demos out there.

Don't emulate - experience this using a real Atari ST and crank up the volume!

Fuzion #185

Fuzion #185 is a cool intro which gave us Ork, by Psygnosis. I love this intro because it presents itself particularly well with lots of colour and an adaptation of one of the most memorable chiptunes ever created. It also makes use of the Atari STe hardware for even better results, but happily works on either machine just fine.

Atari ST demos

Living the dream!

Yesterday I had a demoscene night and relived the old glory days. When we would eagerly await the postman's delivery of floppy disks - from Demo Club and other Atari ST PD libraries. Fun times with beauties like Anomaly, European, Punish Your Machine, Antiques and Rising Force. Also, I re-enjoyed some cool animations like Rippler, Newton's Cradle and Walker. I then finished off listening to Popstars by the awesome YM Rockerz. Which you can see for yourself, is ace!!

Yup, this is my rock and roll lifestyle... Well, when the wife and kids are out! :^)

Circus back²STage

Circus back²STage demo for the Atari STe, by BlaBLa, Cocoon & Sector One.

With such an unusual style, Circus back²STage is a fascinating Atari STe demo. It features a bucket load of crazy, colourful effects in overscan with the most wonderful chip music. Some people hate clowns but get over it - this is literally one of the best demos I have ever seen. Okay, it's hard drive installable and downloads are available via Demozoo.

Demos

Okay folks, I need to select a handful of cool demos for the Atari ST -and- STe computers. I've already chosen about a dozen or so of my personal favourites but I'd love to know which yours are. They don't necessarily need to be predictably famous megademos, anything that oozes a style you love whilst it displays its majestic 68K power!

Atari ST demos

People often ask me if I know of any demos that can be run from their hard drive. Most are obviously designed for floppy disks but there are many which can and many more which have been recently patched. So I have added an "HDD" tag on Demozoo for all the demos I have installed onto my hard drive and there are lots! :)

Of course, this is a work in progress so let me know if I've missed any... Clickety Click to enter Demozoo.

It's-a-me, Mario!

Oh no! Mario is now available for the Atari ST. Phew, thankfully, I'm lying!! This is actually a cool intro screen that was created to be a main-menu for some demo that never got completed. Good old Demozoo informs that it's by Channel 38 and features neat music and a large "play area" making good use of those borders. Oh yeah, so nice!!

My apologies for this video recording which is pretty poor. A real ST/e performs silky smooth.

The History of ULM

I saw a real stupid tweet the other day concerning the Atari ST demoscene from someone that was obviously an Amoeba user and, rather than rise to the bait, it inspired me to write this post!  Besides, we all know the ST has a belting scene which is very much alive & kicking! (view recent masterpieces like We Were @ + Strange roboTS)

I've chanced upon a web page, obviously written by Georges Kesseler, of ULM. It details his interesting ST-history which I thought was pure gold and wondered if it was part of an older website? An intriguing read of a great ST coder.

Flip-O-Demo

I'm starting off my weekend with the gorgeous Flip-O-Demo by Oxygene/Diamond Design because it's just been updated to support hard drive installation. Originally, it was released in 1993 and contains some of the best artwork and visual fx you could imagine - all whilst playing beautiful audio by one of my favourite musicians.

A wonderful Atari ST demo and certainly one of the best out there. Grab it from Demozoo right now.

We Were @

Note - the video was recorded using an emulator and YouTube itself suffers the quality somewhat.
If you can watch it on a real Atari computer - the way it was meant to be enjoyed :-)

This is a brand new demo for the Atari STe and was only released 2 days ago by the mighty Leonard, of Oxygene. Yes, he has always been one of the most uniquely talented programmers but this production blew me away. Check out that Roto Zoomer! Do watch the end credits which feature many interesting details about the coding.

Truly amazing STuff. Beautiful production and certainly one of the best 16-Bit demos, ever!! [download]

ASCII art

Unreversable demo (2013) by M.E.C for Atari ST
Credits : bob_er (code) | Dhor (music) | gwEm (code/music)

I came across this rather mesmerising demo the other night on Demozoo and I just had to record it. Unreversable is an ASCII art sensation accompanied with a funk and dunk of ace chipmusic for an outstanding experience. Perhaps most amazing is that it's only 64kb, quite incredible... I hope you enjoy it as much as I did?

Unreversable is by a group of talented 8Bit'ers called Masters Of Electric City.

Satan Stole My Atari

Here we have a brand-new demo that has just been released & ranked 1st for the "oldskool" combo at Riverwash 2015 party. It requires a juicy 4MB Atari STe but will blow you away as it's fantastic viewing!!

lotsa stars!

I figured that it was about time I uploaded this demo... I've had it for absolute yonks and I should have uploaded it straight away. Why? Because it's so impressive and needs to be shared out amongst the demoscene fanbase. I mean, come on just look at the specs: 1265 zillion+ stars, calculated in real-time and at 50fps. Incredible!!

I would like to see another 16-bit computer try this! So sit back and enjoy the show... Download from Demozoo.

Lights, Camera, Action! (take 2)

Following on from a previous posting, here are the remaining videos being played using a program called ST Video Player. Just like last time, these are running on a stock 8MHz Atari STe w/ a hard drive, of course.

Lights, Camera, Action!

ST Video Player is one of those programs that will drop your mouth wide-open with amazement. You just won't believe that your humble 512kb 8Mhz Atari STE (with a hard drive) can produce such amazing high-colour movies.

This piece of magic was written by Cyg of BlaBla (the creators of some of the best Atari ST/e demos that I've ever seen). Movies come in the format of .CAV files so just drag & drop one onto the program and prepare to be amazed. I hope to see more videos released for the Atari STe - very soon! Download from Demozoo and Pouet.
