Fuji Boink ASCII

Always read the documentation!

I really enjoy digging through the ST's deep archives to see what forgotten goodies I can find, and here is one of the best I've ever seen. It's called Fuji Boink ASCII and deceivingly appears to be nothing but a humble text file. Sadly, I've no idea who to credit for this piece of GFA Basic wizardry, but what I do know is that it's absolutely brilliant and definitely not what I expected to "read" after double-clicking the icon.

I love finding stuff like this!! STay Atari, folks.

ST Globe

By 1999, we will be living on the moon!

In a time long ago, when there were no search engines, we had to read something called a "book". We had other strange things to contend with, too. For example, if we wanted to see a friend, then that would mean leaving the house to meet up - in person - to have a real conversation. Crazy times, right? Well, I've found something cool that takes us back to this prehistoric age (that we'd give our right arm to return to!).

ST Globe was developed by Jean Pierre Cazes, which you can find on the Page 6 website. I thought it was rather amusing (respectfully) but interesting. It definitely put Encyclopædia Britannica to shame... Sadly, my daughter was having none of it and prefers to use Siri or Google. Sheesh, what's up with kids these days?

Can you spot two wrongs?

Those with a keen eye will notice the larger screen space of my GEM desktop. What about the three resolutions that appear selectable? If you saw these things, then you're an Atari ST rock star. I salute you!

I've been experimenting with a few GEM programs that allow larger resolutions and other cool stuff. Some use interlacing to double the vertical resolution, but that can look odd and hurt my eyes! (use 60Hz!!). Others can create a virtual screen by using the Atari STe's hardware scrolling. Why would you wanna scroll?

Interestingly, some programs feature overscan. This is a technique used to make use of the empty borders, and it sparked my curiosity. Using this extra screen space is great, and without any slowdown. Most GEM programs should work perfectly fine, and I'm left wondering why Atari couldn't have made this standard?

Ugly medium resolution?

Like anything in this life, nothing is perfect. Shockingly, this applies to our Atari ST, which has one characteristic I never cared for: its obscure, ugly, stretched medium resolution. Well, since my colour monitor decided to blow up, I have been happily zipping along in monochrome, which would explain the recent run of high-resolution articles. All were written using the classic, 1st Word Plus. (Go on, you can call me a geek!)

It's hardly a modern word processor bursting with features, but it does the job well. Sure, I can't wait to get my new colour monitor, as I'm missing out on games in glorious 16-bit technicolour. However, I have definitely fallen in love with this crisp black-and-white display, which has met every requirement lately.

Who needs an expensive modern computer? Not me!! Yes, I am mad... :^)
